Record Entry Confirmed for Annual SPAR Netball Championships

A busy netball year will come to a fitting close when the annual SPAR National Championships begin in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni on Monday, December 1, 2025. Over 2200 players plus 196 umpires and technical officials will descend on Dr EG Jansen High School for a feast of netball.

The Under-21 championships is being played alongside the senior tournament. 119 districts will compete for the senior A title, which is currently held by Johannesburg as well as the national Under-21 honours which Johannesburg will also defend. This is the biggest ever entry in the history of the Championships to date.

Some of the SPAR Baby Proteas (National Under 21 team) who recently returned from a successful Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar are also confirmed to be playing for the respective districts at the championships. The SPAR Proteas players will however miss this year’s SPAR National Championships as they will be in camp preparing to defend their African Netball Cup in Malawi early December.

Dr EG Jansen High School is one of the top netball venues in Gauteng. The high school boasts nine floodlit hard all-weather courts including six hard all-weather courts at Concordia Primary School which shares premises with the high school.

Newly elected President of NSA, Mami Diale, expressed the importance of the tournament and the positive impact it has for netball in South Africa.

“SPAR National Champs is very important for us because this is a space where we get to see and identify talent. I am grateful to our partner SPAR who continues to buy into our vision and support us. Without their investment, tournaments such as these would not exist. Our plan is to continue growing it so that we give more players opportunities to play and showcase their talents. Who knows, we may have new national players coming out of here again as has been the norm over the years.”
 
Motlalepule Mmatli of Ekurhuleni Netball Association said “hosting the upcoming SPAR National Championship in collaboration with Netball South Africa and title sponsor SPAR is a proud milestone for Ekurhuleni. Netball in our district has shown remarkable growth over the years, and this championship is a reflection of that. We believe that by hosting a tournament of this magnitude, not only are we showcasing our talent and passion for the sport, but we are also inspiring more teams to come on board and be part of Ekurhuleni’s growing netball legacy.”

Netball South Africa confirmed that during the Championships there would be a Deaf Netball Tournament (1-5 December 2025) played in celebration of World Disability Day on Wednesday, 3 December 2025.

SPAR and Netball South Africa (NSA) are fully committed to the battle against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) and to ending period poverty. During the championships, a strong message to #ENDGBVF and #ENDPERIODPOVERTY would be sent.
Mpudi Maubane, National SPAR PR, Communications and Sponsorships Manager said SPAR were proud to headline sponsor the Championships. “This Championships is the largest Interprovincial sport event hosted in South Africa annually and it’s the ideal platform to create awareness amongst the participants and spectators about the fight to #ENDGBVF and #ENDPERIODPOVERTY.  While awareness campaigns serve their purpose in highlighting the issue of GBV and Ending Period Poverty, they cannot stand alone. Collaborations with the likes of NSA, NPA and LifeLine on #EndGBVF is very important for us as it helps to direct and channel support where it is most needed.

The SPAR Group recognises that the aftermath of violence is where real impact needs to occur. Over R7 million is allocated annually for direct support to GBV victims, where they ensure women, children and men can access the care and dignity they deserve following traumatic experiences. 

This commitment goes beyond just financial backing; it signifies the creation of a safety net for victims in their most vulnerable moments. 
SPAR's partnership with the NPA, and particularly work done with Thuthuzela Care Centres, serves as a platform that facilitates the legal redress which victims need, ensuring that their voices are heard, and justice ultimately is served.”

SPAR has also partnered with Netball South Africa in aiming to #EndPeriodPoverty by 2030. Through their joint sanitary pad drive, thousands of learners have been able to stay in school, attend classes and engage in their netball activities.

Tickets for the games will be available for the SPAR Netball Championships at the venue for R10. Safe and secure parking would be available at EG Jansen HS for R20 per vehicle (Monday-Thursday) and R30 (Friday and Saturday).
